Family-owned industrial groups in Jordan and the Gulf, precision manufacturers and machine builders in Switzerland and southern Germany, and the plants that belong to both buy technology for a floor that runs in shifts and a board that thinks in generations. The systems were acquired over decades, the knowledge sits in maintenance logs and in the heads of people close to retirement, and the data belongs behind the plant's own firewall. The regulation follows the product and the network. A machine builder that ships a five-axis centre or a control cabinet is bound by export-control law before it is bound by anything else: the EU regulation on dual-use items, the Swiss Goods Control Act and its ordinance, and the US Export Administration Regulations each decide which goods, software and technical data may leave the country, to whom, and under which licence. Sanctions screening of a customer or a supplier is a legal duty with a compliance officer's name on it. Product safety carries the CE marking and the EU Machinery Regulation. Plant networks that count as critical infrastructure carry operational-technology security obligations: the IEC 62443 series as the engineering standard, NIS2 for EU entities, and the Swiss minimum standard for ICT resilience in essential supply. Personal data about employees and customers falls under the revised Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection, the GDPR and Jordan's Personal Data Protection Law. Every one of these has to be visible in an architecture before it is visible in an audit.
The cycle is measured in machine lifetimes. A press, a kiln or a filling line runs for thirty years, and the software chosen to control it, schedule it and record its maintenance is expected to last as long. Around that core sits an estate that grew by acquisition: an enterprise resource planning system per operating company, a manufacturing execution system per plant, a data historian nobody is permitted to touch, and the spreadsheets that hold the group together in practice. Change happens in maintenance windows measured in hours a year, and a change that misses its window waits for the next one. Anything Altuon builds has to connect to that estate through interfaces it already exposes, run beside the old system until the reconciliation is clean, and roll back inside the window if it does not.
The buyer is a family and a floor at the same time. In a Jordanian or Gulf conglomerate spanning cement, food, packaging, distribution and logistics, the chairman and the second or third generation want to compare businesses that have never been described in the same terms, and the group finance director wants a number he can defend. In a Swiss or German machine builder the owner-manager wants a partner who will still be reachable in fifteen years, the works council wants to know what the system records about people, and the head of production wants nothing on the network he did not approve. The chief information officer, if there is one, is asked to consolidate several systems of record while keeping every plant running. Procurement wants the sub-processor list, the on-site option and the exit terms in writing. A proposal that speaks only to one of them does not reach the board.
Failure is physical. A line that stops because a planning system pushed a bad order; a shipment held at a border because the licence classification was wrong; a controller reached from the office network because a data connection was made for convenience; a group whose customers cannot tell which company they signed with, and therefore which one is liable. None of these announces itself as a software problem, and all of them are. The work has to be designed so that the failure mode is a held order, a blocked change, a flagged supplier or an alarm to a named person, never a stopped plant or a finding from the customs authority.

Can the models and the documents stay on the plant's own infrastructure, with no outside connection?
Yes. The data plane is decided per system in the Define phase and recorded in the architecture register, and for a plant it is usually the plant itself: servers in the site's own racks, on the site's own network segment, with no route to the internet. Language, retrieval and speech models run inside that footprint; the proposal names the hardware the plant provides, the model options that fit it and the process for updating them from media the site controls. Where the group prefers a national cloud or its own data centre, the same register records that instead. Nothing about the plant is processed on infrastructure the plant has not approved.
How do you connect to plant systems without exposing the controllers?
By never touching them. Integration reads from the systems that already sit above the controllers, the historian, the manufacturing execution system and the enterprise resource planning system, through interfaces they already expose, and it writes only to the systems of record on the business side. The network design follows the IEC 62443 model of zones and conduits: anything Altuon deploys sits in a zone the plant's operational-technology owner defines, crosses only the conduits he approves, and is documented in the plant's own asset inventory. Where a data diode or a one-way replication is the site's policy, the architecture is built to it rather than around it.
How do you handle export controls, in the intelligence you produce and in the engagement itself?
In both directions. Supplier and counterparty intelligence is gathered from lawful, public and licensed sources, with provenance recorded to the line, so a sanctions or ownership finding can be shown to have been reached properly; Altuon does not procure information it could not describe the origin of. In the engagement itself, technical data about controlled goods is treated as controlled: the proposal names who on the Altuon side will see it, under which nationality and location constraints, and the agreement carries the technology-control plan the client's compliance officer requires. Classification decisions stay with the client; Altuon prepares the evidence.
Our group runs several enterprise resource planning systems across companies acquired over decades. Will you recommend one?
Only if the case supports it, and often it does not. The Discover phase maps every system of record, what depends on it and what it would cost to stop, and the resulting strategy names which systems remain, which are wrapped behind an integration layer so the group can read them together, and which are retired, in an order that keeps every plant running. A single system is one of the options assessed, not the assumption. Altuon holds no reseller agreements with enterprise software vendors, and the recommendation is written so the board can see what was compared and why.
Who owns the models, the code, the intelligence and the brand assets when the engagement ends?
The client does. Models trained or tuned on the plant's data, the evaluation sets, the integration code, the intelligence archive with its sources, and every brand asset with its licences are assigned to the client on acceptance and delivered in formats the client can maintain without Altuon. Third-party components are listed with their licences before they are used. The exit terms are written into the agreement at the start: the handover period, the documentation standard, the training of the client's own people and the deletion of anything Altuon still holds, with a certificate to show for it.
What happens if your work stops a line, and how are you insured?
The design makes that the failure mode Altuon plans against. Changes are made in agreed maintenance windows with a rehearsed rollback and an acceptance test the plant's own engineers run; production systems are never the first place a change is seen. Liability, indemnity and the limits that apply are stated in the agreement rather than in a schedule the plant finds later, and Altuon carries professional indemnity and cyber cover whose certificates are provided during procurement. Support is defined per system in the service schedule, with response times that match the plant's shift pattern and named people on both sides, so a fault at three in the morning reaches an engineer who knows the site.
